The first initiative of the Program will occur at the European Film Market-EFM, during the Berlin Film Festival, in February, 2014, and will ensure the effective participation of up to 10 film producers from Rio who are members of SICAV, and their film projects in one of the world’s most important international film markets. This initiative will also serve to promote Rio as a preferred destination for foreign and international co-productions, highlighting the film production service sector of Rio.
The initiative in Berlin, which will be repeated in future film markets, consists of three modules: 1) Technical preparation in Rio before each market; 2) Support, promotion and participation in meetings during the international market; 3) Post-market support with follow-up negotiations and evaluation of results. The concept of the program was developed by LATC – Latin American Training Center, with support of the Cesnik, Quintino e Salinas – CQS Law firm, which will operate it.
After a selection process, Rio de Janeiro producers affiliated with SICAV may participate in the Program with finished films, projects in development or projects seeking co-production, sales, distribution, production services or investment. Before departing Rio, each producer will have two individual preparatory meetings with technical consultants to analyze commercial and legal aspects of the film or project, in order to present it in an efficient manner in each market.
The first international market on the Films From Rio calendar is the European Film Market-EFM in Berlin, February 6-14, 2014, followed by the Marche Du Film in Cannes (May 2014). Other international markets included in the calendar are the Shanghai International Film Festival/Market (June, 2014), the American Film Market-AFM, in Los Angeles (November, 2014), and Ventana Sur, in Buenos Aires (December, 2014).
The Films From Rio Program is designed to complement other initiatives of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro aimed at consolidating the role of the city as the principal audiovisual pole of Latin America. The alliance among SICAV, FIRJAN, the Festival do Rio/RioMarket, Rio Negócios and the new Rio Film Commission represents the convergence of public policy interests for the development of the Rio de Janeiro audiovisual industry, and the insertion of its films and film producers in international markets.
